About NLC Mutual
NLC Mutual Insurance Company is a captive mutual insurance company established in 1986 to enhance the risk bearing capacity of state municipal league sponsored risk-sharing pools. The Company was formed with the assistance of the National League of Cities and several of its member state municipal league sponsored pools. NLC Mutual provides reinsurance and related services to its Members.
NLC Mutual’s structure as a mutual company means that its Member Pools own the Company. All profits of the Company are ultimately returned to its Members in the form of dividends and Members’ equity. Representation on the Board of Directors allows Members to influence the direction of the Company to insure that NLC Mutual’s interests are allied with its Member Pools.
As a captive insurance company, NLC Mutual’s only customers are state league sponsored pools. Members have direct access to Company Management in a working relationship of cooperation and trust. The close alignment of interests enhances communication between Member and Company providing for timely decision-making and a clear understanding of Member Pool objectives. This focus has resulted in the development of specialized experience in pooling that makes NLC Mutual uniquely suited to supporting the loss funding requirements of its Members.
NLC Mutual is regulated as an insurance company and is domiciled in Vermont with administrative offices in Washington, D.C. The Company maintains certificates of authority in several other states and the District of Columbia where required by regulation.
The National League of Cities provides management services to NLC Mutual under a service and license agreement. A dedicated professional staff provides underwriting, financial management, marketing and administrative management services from the Washington office. Claims management, loss control and actuarial services are outsourced to professionals in those fields. All Members of the Company are also members of the National League of Cities Risk Information Sharing Consortium (NLC-RISC).
